Ukraine has displayed a diverse strategy encompassing military, diplomatic, and political elements in its continual endeavors to raise its defense capability and seek help abroad in view of its conflict with Russia. While the nation controls the immediate threats of Russian invasion, its leadership has shifted its focus to acquiring solid security guarantees from Western friends instead of concentrating simply on quick NATO membership. Apart from more general US problems, this pragmatic approach reflects the complex geopolitical situation Ukraine experiences under resistance from various NATO countries including Germany, Slovakia, and Hungary.

Leaders of Ukraine have stressed the importance of actual security assurances beyond political rhetoric. This turnabout reveals the flaws in previous treaties such as the Budapest Memorandum, which failed to deter Russia’s intrusions even if it pledged Ukraine’s territorial integrity in return for her nuclear weapons from the Soviet period being abandoned. Emphasizing the importance of strict conditions to deter future aggression, the recently appointed U.N. ambassador Andrii Melnyk has asked legally binding military promises from members of NATO and EU.
