According to South Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS), a North Korean soldier taken prisoner by Ukrainian soldiers died from severe injuries. Under the present circumstances, this is an uncommon and clear picture of North Korea’s changing but divisive posture.

North Korea’s Growing Significance Played in the War Effort of Russia

Ukraine estimates Pyongyang sent 10,000 to 12,000 troops to help Russia mostly in the devastated Kursk region. Claims Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, over 3,000 North Korean troops sent in have been dead or injured since they were dispatched. This figure shows the enormous costs these forces have paid for meager resources, constant opposition from Ukraine, and fierce warfare.

Especially, Ukrainian attacks near Novoivanovka in Kursk have targeted North Korean leaders, compounding losses resulting from logistical issues including insufficient supplies and even shortages of drinking water.

Human Needs and Political Reversals

Shortly after the alive soldier was taken prisoner, Yonhap News Agency first reported the death under Ukrainian custody.
