The world has been glued to the war in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, as the news and social media platforms broadcast every moment of the conflict. Nevertheless, there are still many worrying misunderstandings regarding the war, even if there is a plethora of information. These misconceptions affect public opinion and even international policymaking by distorting the truth. To help shed light on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in an age of disinformation, this article will dispel five common misconceptions.

First Fallacy: The War Started in 2022

Although the public tends to think that the war sprung out out of nowhere in 2022, in reality, preparations for it began far earlier.
The conflict began in 2014, when Russia violated international law by annexing Crimea. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine officially started at this point. Pro-Russian separatists, who were supposedly supported by Moscow, started fighting in the Donbas region of Eastern Ukraine after Crimea was annexed. There had been more than 14,000 casualties in this low-intensity conflict by the year 2022.
